Lute Volleyball Projected To Finish Third
In the 2011 NWC Volleyball Coaches' Pre-Season Poll, the Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team was chosen to finish third in the coming season behind defending champs Whitworth University and rivals UPS.
The Lutes finished win 51 points in the coaches poll, yet were not given any votes for first place. The 2010 season proved difficult for the Lutes, as they finished at 19-7 overall, and in a second-place tie with rivals UPS in NWC play with a record of 13-3. The 2011 squad team will have to replace two key figures in the starting lineup, losing three-time AVCA All-American outside hitter Beth Hanna and 2010 third-team AVCA All-American setter Sarah Beaver to graduation.
Defending NWC champion Whitworth University was picked to finish atop the standings after accruing seven of the nine first-place votes. The Pirates finished 2010 at 18-7, 14-2 in conference matches. The Bucs won their first-round matchup in the NCAA Division III National Tournament a year ago, but lost in the next round in straight sets to St. Olaf (Minn.).
The University of Puget Sound Loggers were projected second in the coaches poll, snatching up the final two first-place votes in the poll. The Loggers return a strong contingent of their team in 2011.
