Lutes Ranked 17th in Volleyball Preseason Poll

Pacific Lutheran, winner of four consecutive Northwest Conference championships, enters the 2010 season ranked 17th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 25 Preseason Poll.

The AVCA poll, released today, showed defending national champion Washington-St. Louis with all 24 first-place votes and 600 total points. Pacific Lutheran, the highest ranked team from the Northwest Conference, received 209 total points after compiling a 20-7 overall record last year. The 2009 Lutes were a perfect 16-0 in conference matches and made the program's sixth appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Kevin Aoki has compiled a 242-124 overall record and led the Lutes to six conference crowns in his 14 previous seasons as PLU head coach. The 2010 Lutes are led by two highly decorated seniors: three-time All-America outside hitter Beth Hanna and 2009 All-America setter Sarah Beaver.

PLU opens its 2010 season on Wednesday, Sept. 1, when it travels to Olympia to face Evergreen State in a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m. The Lutes' 2010 home opener - and also their first conference match - is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 17, when Whitworth comes to Olson Auditorium.
