Lutes Open Season With Win at Saint Martin's

Timeout to discuss strategy in third set.
LACEY - Pacific Lutheran opened its 2009 volleyball season with a 25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-19 victory over host Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelsie Moore finished with 16 kills and a .256 attack percentage to lead the Lutes, who hit .186 for the match. Beth Hanna added nine kills and 16 digs, Kelcy Joynt had seven kills in two games, and Sarah Beaver finished with five kills and 34 assists to lead the Lutes.
A total of 14 different players saw action for PLU, which finished with four solo blocks and eight block assists. Erin Bremond collected two solo blocks and two block assists. Brenna Archibald and Lauren Poole both finished the match with 14 digs for PLU.
Saint Martin's rallied from a 2-0 set deficit behind Teilissa Tua, who finished with a match-high 12 kills for the hosts.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action this Friday and Saturday with four matches at the Puget Sound Premier Tournament hosted by the University of Puget Sound. The Lutes, ranked No. 13 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason Top 25, will face three other nationally ranked teams in the event. They open against No. 10 St. Benedict's (Minn.) at 11 a.m. Friday and follow that with a 2 p.m. match against No. 19 and tournament host UPS. Pacific Lutheran plays No. 25 Simpson (Iowa) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
