Learning Experience for PLU at ITA Regionals

SALEM, Ore. - It was a learning experience for the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis contingent that competed last weekend at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by Willamette University.

All four of PLU players - Leah Newell, Tina Aarsvold, Cora Wigen and Allison McClure - lost their opening singles matches. Aarsvold was the only winner in the first round of consolation singles play, beating Emily Bee from the host school, 9-7. Aarsvold then ran into Alli Marshall, the No. 4 seed who was upset in the opening round, and Marshall won 8-0. Marshall had defeated Newell by an 8-4 score in an earlier consolation match, and she went on to win the consolation singles title.

In doubles play, Wigen and McClure combined for an 8-5 first-round win over Bethany Nguyen and Alli Wittrig from George Fox before losing 8-1 to eventual champions Courtney Lawless and Alyssa Roberg from Whitman. Aarsvold and Newell lost in the opening round and later in the consolation bracket first round.
