Women's Tennis Wraps Up 2010 Season
THAT'S A WRAP: Pacific Lutheran wraps up its 2010 women's tennis season this weekend with a pair of Northwest Conference matches. The Lutes host Linfield at noon on Saturday and Puget Sound at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
ABOUT THE LUTES: The Lutes, 3-13 overall and 3-11 in the conference, currently hold down seventh place in the NWC standings. They will be unable to improve on that standing, however, and as a result will not qualify for the conference postseason tournament scheduled for April 16-17 in Yakima. PLU could tie Pacific fro the sixth and final spot in the standings, but the Boxers hold the tiebreaker over the Lutes by virtue of two regular season wins.
THE LAST TIME: It will be difficult at best for the Lutes to challenge Linfield, which is in second place in the standings with an 11-2 record. The Wildcats clawed the Lutes, 9-0, the first time the teams played each other back on March 5 in McMinnville, Ore. PLU had better success against Puget Sound the first time through, however, taking a 6-3 victory on March 7. Ashley Coats and Deanna Ellmer both won crucial three-set victories in singles play as as the Lutes beat the Loggers. PLU took the lead following doubles play with 8-4 wins in both the first and third positions. Coats and Cora Wigen beat Samantha Taylor and Madison Holtz at No. 1, and Ellmer and Caitlyn Hoerr topped Ashley Dombrow and Katie Hurley at No. 3. Coats and Ellmer both came up with third-set singles wins to make the difference. Coats took the No. 1 match with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Taylor, while Ellmer garnered the win at No. 5 over Devin Fields, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Wigen and Tina Aarsvold both had straight set victories in their singles matches, Wigen knocking off Holtz at No. 2, 6-0, 6-4, and Aarsvold taking the measure of Yu at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3.
SENIOR DAY: Ashley Coats, the only senior on the PLU roster, will finish her career on Sunday against Puget Sound.
