PLU Women Finish Strong Second at NW Invitational

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Pacific Lutheran made a statement in conference women's swimming on Friday and Saturday with a strong second-place finish at the Northwest Invitational hosted by Linfield College.

Whitworth won the team title as expected with 687.5 points, and the Lutes were close behind with 607 points. Whitman was a distant third with 496 points, followed by Pacific with 493.5, Linfield 380, Willamette 200 and College of Idaho 106.

Team depth played an important role for the Lutes, who won only one event but who also had three top-eight finishers in a trio of different events.

Frosh Toni Castillo was the event winner, taking the 100 butterfly by more than a full second in the time of 59.64. Castillo also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Kina Ackerman also had three top finishes, taking fifth in the 200 individual medley, third in the 400 IM and third in the 1650 freestyle. Sophomore Darla Avis was fourth in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 backstroke.
