Second Half Goal Flurry Leads UPS Past Lutes

PARKLAND - Puget Sound scored three goals in just under three minutes of the second half on the way to a 4-0 Northwest Conference women's soccer victory over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on Wednesday at the PLU soccer field.

The Lutes (3-12-1 overall, 3-9-1 NWC) weathered heavy Puget Sound pressure for the first 70 minutes until the visitors finally broke through on Kelly Andersen's third goal of the season at 70:35. Center back Kayla Boortz hit a long ball over the top of the PLU back line and Anderson used her speed to get there first, taking a couple of touches before slotting the ball just under hard-charging PLU keeper Lauren Chambard.

That goal finally broke open the dam, and the Loggers (14-1-2, 11-1-1) poured through with two more goals in the next several minutes. Another long ball over the top, this one from Stefani Vert to Theresa Henle, resulted in Henle's low shot past Chambard at the 72:51 mark. Henle also scored the team's third goal of the match and her 14th of the season, taking a pass from Abby Goss and hitting it to past Chambard at 73:17.

The final Puget Sound tally came on a corner kick at 84:41. Lauren Swanson flicked Mikaela Freeman's corner to the back post where Jenny Moore took a touch before finishing for her fifth goal of the season.

The Loggers finished the match with 23 shots, including 16 on goal, and they also hit the crossbar and the post. Chambard made 11 saves, including at least two of the spectacular variety, and her teammates also cleared one ball off the line.

On the other end of the field, PLU finished with six shots, four of them on goal. Three of the shots came in one flurry in the 82nd minute and forced two saves from Jess Yarbrough and also a Puget Sound team save. Olivia Lee's long-range left-footed effort was tipped off the bar by Yarbrough, who then stopped Mimi Granlund's follow shot. Brittney Bronson pounced on that rebound and her shot was stopped by the Puget Sound defense. Yarbrough, who played the final 45 minutes in place of starting keeper Casey Thayer, finished with three saves.

Puget Sound had 13 corner kicks to zero for the Lutes.
