Women Golfers Geared Up for NWC Fall Classic

THIS WEEKEND: Pacific Lutheran competes in the NWC Fall Classic, Saturday and Sunday, Heron Lakes Golf Club in Portland, Ore.

MAJOR NO. 1: Pacific Lutheran will play in the first of the Northwest Conference's three "major" tournaments, the NWC Fall Classic, this Saturday and Sunday at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland, Ore. This weekend's Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic, scheduled for April 7-8 in Walla Walla, Wash., both count 25 percent toward the overall conference championship. The NWC Championships, which will be played April 14-15 in Kennewick, Wash., counts the other 50 percent, with the overall Northwest Conference champion earning the NWC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament.

TEEING IT UP ON THE GREEN BACK COURSE: The women's tournament gets underway at 11 a.m. and will be held on the Green Back Course at Heron Lakes. The teams will go off in waves - George Fox, Whitman and Linfield in the first wave, Whitworth, Pacific and Puget Sound in the second wave, and PLU, Willamette and Lewis & Clark in the third wave. That means that the Lutes will not start until No. 1 player, senior Whitney Hobbs, tees off at 12:40 p.m. Other PLU entrants are frosh Kristina Norlin, sophomore Julie Heffernan, frosh Paige Henry, and senior Karina Shelton.

2010 FALL CLASSIC RESULTS: George Fox won the team title and Pacific Lutheran placed sixth at the 2010 Northwest Conference Fall Classic women's golf tournament held at Lost Tracks Golf Club in Bend, Ore. George Fox came from eight strokes back to win the team title by a comfortable 18 shots. The Bruins carded rounds of 328 and 331 for a two-day total of 659. PLU shot a 766 with repeat rounds of 383-383. Puget Sound's Sarah Bicker had rounds of 78 and 79 for an 11 over-par 157 to win medalist honors. Kindra Stamps had back-to-back rounds of 94 for a 188, finishing 27th overall to lead the Lutes.

LUTES IN THE FALL: PLU has played in two tournaments this fall, including the recent Concordia Women's Golf Invitational held Saturday, Oct. 15, at Heron Lakes Golf Club. Concordia won its own tournament with a 314, followed by Whitman at 317, PLU with a very competitive 349, and Corban with 373. Whitney Hobbs and Kristina Norlin tied for low honors for the Lutes, both carding 11-over-par 83 on the par 72, 5,950-yard layout. At the Saint Martin's Invitational held Oct. 7-8 at Olympia Golf & Country Club, the Lutes shot a 716 total to place eighth. PLU shot its best competitive round of women's golf in at least several years in the second round, carding a 342 after an opening-day 375. Hobbs a two-over 75 for a two-round total of 163, good for a 17th-place tie.
