Seconds Please: Both PLU Team Second at NWI

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Led by a first-place finish from Chase Mesford in the men's 200 freestyle and from Toni Castillo in the women's 100 butterfly, Pacific Lutheran placed second in both divisions of the Northwest Invitational swimming meet held Friday and Saturday and hosted by Linfield College.

Men's Results

Whitworth easily won the team competition with 846.5 points, followed by PLU with 614 and Whitman with 539.5. Rounding out the team scoring were Pacific with 324.5, Linfield 285, College of Idaho 269.5 and Willamette 193.

Mesford, a junior, clocked 1:48.75 to win the 200 free, and he also placed third in the 100 free and sixth in the 500 free. Sophomore Jacob Deines was among the other top PLU performers as he finished second in the 200 butterfly, fifth in the 400 individual medley and eighth in the 200 IM. Junior Phil Rempe was seventh in the 50 free, fourth in the 100 fly and sixth in the 200 fly.

Depth was a factor for the Lutes, who had at least one top-eight finisher in every event and four in the 200 butterfly.

Women's Results

Pacific Lutheran made a statement in conference women's swimming on Friday and Saturday with a strong second-place finish at the Northwest Invitational hosted by Linfield College.

Whitworth won the team title as expected with 687.5 points, and the Lutes were close behind with 607 points. Whitman was a distant third with 496 points, followed by Pacific with 493.5, Linfield 380, Willamette 200 and College of Idaho 106.

Team depth played an important role for the Lutes, who won only one event but who also had three top-eight finishers in a trio of different events.

Frosh Toni Castillo was the event winner, taking the 100 butterfly by more than a full second in the time of 59.64. Castillo also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Kina Ackerman also had three top finishes, taking fifth in the 200 individual medley, third in the 400 IM and third in the 1650 freestyle. Sophomore Darla Avis was fourth in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 backstroke.
