Lutes Open Season Hosting Sprint Pentathlon
Pacific Lutheran opens its 2009-10 swimming season on Friday evening when it hosts the Northwest Conference Sprint Pentathlon at the PLU pool.
The Lutes will be right back in the pool again on Saturday when they compete in the NWC Relays starting at 11 a.m. at the University of Puget Sound.
The NWC Sprint Pentathlon brings together all of the conference teams with swimming programs - PLU, Puget Sound, Whitworth, Whitman, Lewis & Clark, Linfield, Pacific and Willamette. Each swimmer from all eight teams will compete in a 50-yard race in each stroke along with a 100-yard individual medley. The cumulative times for each swimmer provide a basis for the individual winner.
At last year's NWC Sprint Pentathlon, Pacific Lutheran's Jessie Klauder finished eighth in the women's division with a cumulative time of 3:09.59. Klauder, now a junior, is one of 18 members on the PLU women's swimming team.
Rayan Carter is the top returning PLU male swimmer from last year's sprint pentathlon. Carter, now a sophomore, finished 11th overall with a cumulative total of 2:46.65.
Puget Sound won last year's men's competition with 284 points followed by PLU with 175, Linfield 126, Whitman 92, Pacific 61.5, Willamette 36 and Lewis & Clark 0.5. Puget Sound also won the women's event with 258 points followed by Lewis & Clark with 240.5, Pacific 150, Pacific Lutheran 60, Linfield 27.5, Whitman 20 and Willamette 19.
