Men's Varsity 8 Brings Home Meyer Trophy

AMERICAN LAKE - Pacific Lutheran ended a string of 10 straight Puget Sound wins in the Meyer Cup race Saturday morning, easily defeating the Loggers in windy conditions and choppy water.

The Lutes crossed the finish line in 7:05.38, with the Loggers well back at 7:50.98.

Puget Sound, meanwhile, took back the Lamberth Cup after the Lutes ended a nine-year UPS winning streak in 2011 with a victory in a race featuring the women's varsity 4+ boats. This season's result was certainly one of the closest races in the Cup's history with UPS clocking 8:16.20 and PLU finishing in 8:19.05. The number two UPS boat placed third in a time of 8:47.73.

There were two other races on Saturday and they also were split between the two programs. the PLU women's junior varsity 8 finished in 8:05.19 to beat Puget Sound's 8:47.16, and the Puget Sound men's junior varsity rowed a fast 7:07.33 to beat PLU's 7:34.20.

In a men's 4+ exhibition that opened the race day it was PLU beating UPS by seven seconds with a time of 8:01.
