Lutes Notch a Trio of Second-Place Finishes in Daffodil Cup
Pacific Lutheran rowers finished second in three different races at the Daffodil Cup held Saturday morning on American Lake. The regular 2000-meter course was shortened by 100 meters partway through the regatta because of harsh weather conditions.
Pacific Lutheran boats placed second in the men's lightweight 4, women's lightweight 4 and women's second varsity 4 races. The Lutes finished third in the women's varsity 4 event.
The men's lightweight four "had an awesome start and a three-seat lead on WSU and held that until about the 1,000-meter mark, then lost steam," said PLU head coach Tone Lawver.
"The women's junior varsity 4 had a super sprint in the last race, coming from behind and moving from fifth to a second-place finish," said Lawver.
In the featured women's varsity 8 race, the Lutes rowers "clashed oars twice with Lewis & Clark causing a dead stop in the first 200 meters of the race," said Lawver, likening the incident to a track & field relay team dropping the baton, stopping to pick it up, and then continuing the race. "The crew recovered and rowed very strong to the finish," he added, but they could not catch the pack.
PLU returns to action next Saturday at the NCRC Championships on Lake Vancouver in Vancouver, Wash.
