Lutes claim 7-2 rivalry win over Puget Sound
TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran opened the day with a sweep in the doubles round and wrapped finished with four singles wins to claim a 7-2 Northwest Conference men's tennis victory against cross-town rival Puget Sound Friday at Sprinker Recreation Center.
The win improves Pacific Lutheran's record to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in the NWC, while Puget Sound falls to 3-10 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
"It was a great win for our team, as we worked really hard the last couple weeks to try to improve," PLU head coach Rocky Poulin said.
The first two doubles matches were fairly close, as Jake Yannello and Spencer Herron won 8-5 and Neal Berg and Sam Angel teamed up for an 8-6 win. James Okubo and Sam Stadter closed the door in quickly in the third doubles match with an 8-1 victory.
Stadter kept it going in the singles round, taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the top of the ladder. Yannello picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Okubo won 6-4, 6-1. Brandon Bulaclac wrapped up the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 6 singles match.
The Lutes host Linfield Saturday at 1 p.m. in an NWC match at the PLU tennis courts.
