OJAI TOURNAMENT: Pacific Lutheran men's tennis players Luke Olson and Jason Bower are entered in singles and doubles draws at the 113th Ojai Valley Tournament, which will be played this weekend in Ojai, Calif., and surrounding areas.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: For the 17th consecutive year, the Men's Division III tennis tournament will be a part of the greater 113th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. The Division III event starts on Friday, April 26, at Moranda Park in Port Hueneme and surrounding areas. Matches on Saturday and Sunday will be held in Ojai, with both the singles and doubles final being played at historic Libbey Park. Last year's tournament champions were Nick Ballou from Cal Lutheran in singles and Alex Lane and Robbie Erani from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in doubles.
SINGLES AND DOUBLES DRAWS: Luke Olson, who compiled an 8-10 singles record including a 6-10 mark at No. 2 this season, will face Zhenya Pereverzin from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in his opening singles match. The winner of that contest advances to face No. 8 seed Julian Seneviratne from Whittier. Bower, 5-13 at No. 1 singles, meets Kyle Coates from Chapman. Coates is 5-11 this year, and in a dual match between PLU and Chapman played March 24, Coates defeated PLU's Olson, 6-2, 6-3. Olson and Bower lost the one doubles match they played together this season. They face No. 13 seed Alex Lane and Bryce Bettwy from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
HISTORY LESSON: Pacific Lutheran men's tennis made its biggest mark at the Ojai Tournament in 2007 when David Miller and Justin Larimore won the Division III men's doubles title. They entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed and won four matches to reach the final, where they beat No. 5 seed Max Liberty-Point and Brian Pybas from UC Santa Cruz, 6-3, 6-4.
