WALLA WALLA - George Fox defeated Pacific Lutheran, 5-0, to advance to the Northwest Conference men's tennis tournament championship, while at the same time ending the season for the Lutes.
The Bruins will play tournament host Whitman, a 5-0 winner over Pacific, for the NWC title on Sunday afternoon. Pacific Lutheran ended its season with an 11-8 record.
George Fox swept through all three doubles matches on the way to a convincing 3-0 lead, and as soon as it won two singles matches to assure the victory the remainder of the contests were stopped.
Pacific Lutheran sophomore Luke Olson and Sam Angel came the closest to earning their team a point, going to a tiebreaker before losing by a 9-8 (7-2) score to Chris Lilley and Peter Brown in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Bruins were too strong for the Lutes in the other matches. At No. 1, Shawn Aldrich and Justin McClain topped Jason Bower and Taylor Dickey, 8-1, and at No. 3 it was Preston Mann and Drew Milton over Mitch Yannello and Jake Yannello, 8-4.
The only two singles matches that were needed came at No. 3, where Aldrich beat Angel 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 4 where Mann topped Mitch Yannello, 6-1, 6-4.
Bower and Olson continue their season next weekend when they participate in both singles and doubles play at the 113th Annual Ojai Tournament in Ojai, Calif. For the rest of the team, the season is now over.
