Whitman remained undefeated in Northwest Conference men's tennis on Saturday with 7-2 and 8-1 wins over Pacific Lutheran at Sprinker Tennis Center.
The Lutes are now 11-7 overall and 9-3 in conference action. Whitman, ranked No. 15 in Division III men's tennis, is 14-6 overall and 11-0 in the NWC. The Missionaries need a victory over one-win Puget Sound to wrap up another unbeaten NWC campaign.
Pacific Lutheran now looks ahead to at Tuesday afternoon non-conference contest against NCAA Division I opponent Seattle University before participating in the Northwest Conference tournament, which it enters as the No. 3 seed. The Lutes will face No. 2 seed George Fox on Saturday, April 20, at Whitman College in Walla Walla. Whitman went undefeated to win the NWC regular season title and will face No. 4 seed Pacific. The winners advance to the conference tournament title match on Sunday, April 21.
Match One - Whitman 7, PLU 2
The Lutes started out with wins in two of the three doubles matches, but Whitman's depth proved to be too much as the Missionaries won all six singles contests in straight sets. In fact, Whitman lost as many as five games in only two of the matches in rallying for the team win.
Sam Angel and Luke Olson defeated James Rivers and Steven Rosten, 8-6, to win at No. 2 doubles, and Mitch Yannello and Jake Yannello combined for an 8-5 win over Matt Tesmond and Sam Sadeghi at No. 3 doubles.
Whitman singles winners were Colton Malesovas, Andy Riggs, Sadeghi, Rosten, Rivers and Alex Noyes.
Match Two - Whitman 8, PLU 1
Senior Taylor Dickey picked up PLU's only victory in the second match with a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) super-tiebreaker victory over Atanas Atanasov.
