PLU Men's Tennis Finishes Off Linfield

Mitch Yannello

McMINNVILLE, Ore - Pacific Lutheran took another significant step toward a spot in the Northwest Conference postseason tournament by beating Linfield, 8-1, in a men's tennis match played Saturday at Linfield Tennis Center.

PLU is now 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the conference, and based on the NWC results has five points in the standings. The top four regular season finishers advance to the postseason tournament, and the Lutes are in a good position to do just that following Saturday's victory.

The team's only loss came at No. 1 doubles where the Linfield duo of Zachery Lyons and Lukas Kleinman beat Luke Olson and Sam Angel, 8-5.

After that, PLU mostly had things its way. The doubles tandems of Jason Bower-Taylor Dickey and Mitch Yannello-Jake Yannello both won their matches by 8-4 scores.

The Lutes swept the singles, including four in straight sets. Those wins went to Bower, Mitch Yannello, Dickey and Jake Yannello.

Winning in three sets were Olson and Angel. "Those were big-hearted wins by Sam and Luke today," PLU head coach Rocky Poulin said.

"Jason was rock solid at number one, which gave us a strong starting point in singles and we built on it," Poulin added. "Linfield was looking for its first win and played tough at the start, but we weathered the storm."
