Lutes Beat Willamette, Improve Record to 3-1

SALEM – Pacific Lutheran made it three wins in four matches to start the 2013 men's tennis season as the Lutes defeated host Willamette, 5-4, in a Northwest Conference dual played Saturday at Courthouse Tennis Center.

The Lutes rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to earn the victory against the Bearcats, ranked No. 19 in the Division III West Region preseason poll. PLU has now defeated two teams (12th-ranked Pacific was the other) in the first two weeks of the season.

With the team score tied at 3-3 following singles wins by Taylor Dickey and Brandon Bulaclac, the Lutes wrapped up the match when Sam Angel and Luke Olson defeated their opponents. Angel beat Will Cooper at third singles by a 7-5, 6-3 score, and Olson followed shortly thereafter with a 6-4, 6-7 (7-1), 6-3 win over Sam Wexman at second singles. Olson had a couple of match points in the second set before Wexman rallied to send it to a third set.

Dickey made quick work of Devin Abney at fourth singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win, and Bulaclac took care of Colin Yamaguchi, 6-3, 6-4, at sixth singles.

Willamette won the other two singles matches with Joshua Wong topping Jason Bower 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, and Jack Schreiber outlasting Mitch Yannello 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles.

Dickey's singles win gave him two victories on this day after he teamed with Bower for an 8-3 decision over Cooper and Abney at second doubles.

In the other two pairs matches Wong and Wexman beat Angel and Olson in the featured match by an 8-4 score, and Yamaguchi and Gunnar Lee top Yannello and Bulaclac, 8-6, at third doubles.
