Men's Tennis Schedule in Oregon Changes Due to Weather
COMING UP: Pacific Lutheran, winner of two straight Northwest Conference men's tennis matches to start the season, is having to sidestep lousy weather in Oregon and will now play its weekend matches at indoor facilities.
SCHEDULE CHANGES: Today's match against George Fox, originally scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at the GFU campus courts, will now start at 5 p.m. and will be played at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore. The team's match at Willamette has been moved to the Courthouse Tennis Center in Salem and will begin at 11 a.m.
ROAD WARRIORS: As they head down to Oregon for weekend matches, the Lutes take on the title of Road Warriors with 11 of their next 12 matches coming away from the friendly confines of Sprinker Tennis Center. PLU plays Lewis & Clark in a home match on Saturday, March 2, but other than that it will play nine road matches through the month of March.
LUTES 2-0 AFTER FIRST WEEKEND OF PLAY: The Lutes opened their 2013 season in fine fashion last weekend, taking an 8-1 win over Linfield and a 5-4 victory over Pacific, with both matches played at Sprinker Recreation Center. The win over Pacific was especially gratifying for Pacific Lutheran because the visiting Boxers came into the contest ranked No. 12 in the Division III West Region rankings. Pacific had finished second in the 2012 Northwest Conference regular season standings and returned three of its top players, including all-conference standouts Troy Zuroske and Giancarlo Battaglia.
GREAT START FOR THE COUSINS: PLU freshman cousins Mitch Yannello and Jake Yannello got off to a solid start during their first collegiate spring season. The Yannellos, who play No. 3 doubles together, won both of their doubles matches last weekend. In singles, No. 5 Mitch and No. 6 Jake swept a pair of opponents.
