Men's Tennis Beats Pacific to Open Season 2-0

Jason Bower won his doubles match.

PARKLAND - Pacific Lutheran made it two straight wins to open the season as the Lutes defeated the visiting Pacific Boxers, 5-4, in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match played Saturday afternoon at Sprinker Tennis Center.

The win was especially satisfying for the young Lutes because it came against a Pacific team ranked No. 12 in the region.

PLU opened by winning two of the three doubles matches before splitting in singles play.

Pacific's outstanding doubles team of Troy Zuroski and Giancarlo Battaglia made quick work of Sam Angel and Luke Olson at No. 1, 8-0, but after that doubles play belonged to the Lutes.

Taylor Dickey and Jason Bower combined for an 8-2 win over Alen Suklje and David Yanagita at No. 2, and then Jake Yannello and Mitch Yannello topped Lorne Bulling and Kolin Wong, 8-5, at No. 3.

The Yannello cousins, who opened their collegiate careers yesterday with victories in their doubles and singles matches, made it two in a row on Saturday. Mitch defeated Yanagita, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5, and Jake beat Wong, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.

Olson was PLU's other singles winner, defeating Suklje in three setsm, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. As it turned out, that was the pivotal match, because the Boxers got wins from Zuroske at No. 1, Battaglia at No. 2 and Bulling at No. 4.

Pacific Lutheran is back in action next weekend when it travels to Oregon to face George Fox on Friday and Willamette on Satuday.
