PLU's Slim Tournament Hopes Vanish

SPOKANE - Whitworth defeated Pacific Lutheran, 6-3, on Saturday, ending the Lutes' slim hopes of qualifying for the Northwest Conference men's tennis postseason tournament.

The Pirates improved their overall record to 11-9 and their conference mark to 8-4, while PLU dropped to 6-11 overall and 4-7 in the NWC. The Lutes conclude the dual match portion of their schedule on Sunday when they face unbeaten Whitman in Walla Walla. After that, several PLU players are expected to participate in the Ojai Tournament in late April in Ojai, Calif.

Whitworth took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, and then won four of the six singles matches to ice the win.

Daniel Cotton and Reed Gunstone were PLU's winners in singles. Playing at No. 4, Cotton defeated Joe Wales, 6-4, 6-2, while No. 5 Gunstone topped Colin Barrett, 6-4, 6-4.

Scott Sheldon and Taylor Dickey continued their outstanding play in conference doubles matches, beating Daniel Redfern and Barrett, 8-6, in the featured No. 1 match.
