Lutes Beat Loggers for 40th Consecutive Time
TACOMA - Pacific Lutheran made it 40 straight dual match wins over the Puget Sound Loggers by taking a 6-3 Northwest Conference victory on Friday night at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
The Lutes (5-7 overall, 4-6 NWC) beat the Loggers, 7-2, nine days ago, but the hosts made it more difficult this time around. Scott Sheldon, playing No. 1 singles for PLU, rallied from a set down for a key victory, and he and doubles partner Taylor Dickey wrapped up the victory with a win at No. 1 doubles.
In a departure from the norm, the teams opened the match with singles action. Sheldon was one of four PLU players to win his match, losing the first set 6-4 to Michael Cutter before taking the next two sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Taylor Dickey beat George Murphy, 6-1, 6-1, Zack AhYat topped Scott Finkleman, 6-0, 6-1, and Daniel Cotton dumped Chas Stewart, 6-4, 6-3, to round out the top four singles matches. The Loggers (3-10, 2-7) got singles wins from Nick Kelley at No. 5 and from Alex Harrison at No. 6.
Sheldon and Dickey continued their excellent No. 1 doubles play with an 8-6 victory over Murphy and Brent Hoshiba, while AhYat and Neal Berg got the measure of Cutter and Harrison, 8-6, in the No. 3 slot. Kelley and Stewart won their match at No. 2 doubles.
Next up for PLU is a spring break trip to California that will feature non-conference matches at Cal Tech, Chapman, Whittier and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Lutes conclude the dual match regular season on April 9 and 10 with matches at Whitworth and Whitman, respectively.
