Lutes Knocked Out of NWC Tournament
YAKIMA - Defending champion Whitman put an end to the Pacific Lutheran men's tennis season on Friday with a 5-1 win in the semifinal round of the Northwest Conference Championships being held at Yakima Tennis Club.
Whitman, the top seed in this event and winner of two consecutive NWC postseason tournaments, advances to the championship match against third seed Willamette, a 5-3 upset winner over second seed Linfield. The championship winner will earn the NWC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament.
For the Lutes, the season comes to an end with a 14-10 overall record. Two players, seniors Joel Trudel and Justin Peterson, will represent PLU in next weekend's Ojai Tournament in Ojai, Calif.
The Lutes picked up their only point in at No. 2 doubles where Scott Sheldon and Michael Manser defeated Christoph Fuchs and Quin Miller, 9-7. The Missionaries won at No. 1 doubles where Matt Solomon and Etienne Moshevich topped Justin Peterson and Joel Trudel, 8-4, and at No. 3 where Jeff Tolman and Nadeem Kassam beat Brent Smoots and Taylor Dickey, 8-6.
Whitman took wins at the top three singles positions to earn the five points necessary to win the match. On the No. 1 court, Solomon rallied from a set down to top Trudel, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Tolman beat Peterson 6-4, 7-5, and at No. 3 it was Moshevich over Kevin Floyd, 6-2, 6-1. The remaining singles matches were discontinued at that point.
