Pacific Lutheran and Corban End in 1-1 Deadlock
SPOKANE, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran took a 1-0 lead in the first minute but Corban scored a second half goal and the teams went on to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in Saturday's final day of the Whitworth Soccer Classic.
The Lutes end their non-conference slate with a 1-3-1 record and now turn their attention to their home and Northwest Conference opener, a 2:30 p.m. Saturday contest against George Fox. Corban, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Cascade Collegiate Conference, is now 1-1-2 for the season.
Derek Johnson scored his second goal of the season just 34 seconds into the match, firing home from the top of the box after receiving a pass from Jordan Downing. The Lutes kept the pressure on the Warriors throughout the half and ended up with an 11-7 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes. Junior keeper Sam Watkins made two saves to keep Corban off of the scoreboard.
The Warriors knotted the score when Arsinio Walker angled the ball past PLU keeper Mike Arguello and into net from the right side, the assist going to Tyler Hagen. Corban had 11 shots to eight for the Lutes in the second half.
In the overtime, both teams combined for seven shots. Corban almost had the winning goal in the first overtime but Walker's shot hit the post. In the second overtime, Downing's header was cleared off of the line by the Corban defense.
PLU finished with 26 total shots, including nine on goal, while Corban had 25 shots, including five on goal. The Warriors had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
