Lutes Rally, Beat St. Thomas in Overtime

ST. PETER, Minn. - Pacific Lutheran fell behind 2-0 early but rallied to defeat the St. Thomas Tommies, 3-2 in overtime, in a non-conference men's soccer match played Saturday afternoon at Gustavus Adolphus University.

Senior midfielder Andy Hyres scored the match winner, taking a pass from Surafel Wodajo and beating St. Thomas goalkeeper Carlos Castelan 6:30 into the first overtime.

The Lutes had to rally from a 2-0 deficit just 10 minutes into the match after Kris O'Toole put the Tommies on the board at the 5:11 mark and Josh Pozner doubled the lead at 10:13. PLU's rally started with a goal by freshman midfielder Mohamed Bouzakraft at 38:17, and Daniele Zaccagnini tied it at 62:01. That set up Hyres' winning goal in overtime.

After a very slow start, the Lutes ended up with nine shots, including seven on goal, compared to seven shots, four on goal, for the Tommies. PLU goalkeeper Brian Kostol made two saves, the second coming in overtime and allowing the Lutes to stay in the game and eventually pull out the victory.

PLU, now 1-1 for the season, returns to action on Monday when it faces host Gustavus Adolphus in another non-conference match.
