KARAMATIC, BJORGO EARN FIRST TEAM NOD: Pacific Lutheran was well represented on the All-Northwest Conference team announced Monday afternoon, Nov. 17. Senior forward Derek Karamatic (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Gig Harbor HS), was joined on the first team by junior midfielder Jason Bjorgo, (Redmond, Wash. / Eastlake HS, Evergreen State). Karamatic led the Lutes with nine goals, six of which came in the final three matches, including a hat trick against Linfield in the season finale. All of Karamatic's nine goals came in conference matches, putting him at the top of the NWC list in that category. With three assists in conference, Karamatic finished with 21 total points and making him the top point scorer among NWC players in conference play. Bjorgo, who finished the season with two goals and three assists, often unnerved opposing teams with his speed and aggressive play down the left flank.
LOTS OF LUTES RECOGNIZED: The Lutes were represented on the second team by sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Mangum (Bothell, Wash. / Juanita HS), junior defender Derek MacLean (Seattle, Wash. / Kennedy HS), senior defender Andy Stolz (Tacoma, Wash. / Life Christian Academy) and freshman midfielder Surafel Worku (Renton, Wash. / Lindbergh HS). Making the honorable mention list were junior defender Scott Parsons (Issaquah, Wash. / Skyline HS), senior defender Trevor McDonald (University Place, Wash. / Curtis HS) and freshman forward Ricky Morales (Lake Tapps, Wash. / Auburn Riverside HS). It is noteworthy, and not surprising, that goalkeeper Mangum and the entire PLU back line - Stolz, MacLean, Parsons and McDonald - earned either second team or honorable mention recognition. That's because the Lutes finished second in the conference giving up just 12 goals in 14 matches. Worku and Morales, a pair of freshman, showed their attacking talent throughout the season, Morales finishing with four goals and Worku with three.
