Lutes Hammer at Willamette Net, Take 2-0 Victory
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette goalkeeper Mark Bennett earned 12 saves, including several spectacular plays, and he needed every one of them. Even with Bennett in good form, it wasn't enough to keep the visiting Pacific Lutheran Lutes from earning a 2-0 Northwest Conference victory over the Bearcats on Saturday at Sparks Field.
Ricky Morales and Derek Karamatic scored the goals for Pacific Lutheran, which improved to 7-8-2, including a 5-4-2 record in the Northwest Conference. Willamette fell to 3-11-1 overall, 2-8-1 in the NWC.
Morales scored the first goal for the Lutes when his 11-yard shot found the lower left corner of the net just 8:47 in the match. PLU took that 1-0 lead into the second half, and it was in that period that the Lutes really put the pressure on Willamette. Bennett was particularly strong with 11 of his 12 saves coming in the final 45 minutes.
Karamatic got the Lutes' second goal on a rebound following a Bennett save, knocking the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. Both goals in the game were unassisted.
The Lutes outshot the Bearcats 25-9 overall, including 15-6 in the second half. PLU also held a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams earned six corner kicks. PLU goalie Daniel Mangum was credited with four saves to register his seventh shutout of the year.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 1:30 p.m. Sunday when it plays at George Fox in another Northwest Conference contest.
