Second Round Even Better as PLU Places Third
WALLA WALLA - Pacific Lutheran carded an outstanding second-round score of 296 and finished with a 36-hole total of 601 to place third at the Whitman Men's Golf Invitational held Saturday and Sunday at Wine Valley Country Club.
Whitworth fired rounds of 292 and 299 for a 591 total, just one stroke better than Linfield's 297-295 - 592. Pacific Lutheran, tied with Whitman for third place after an opening-round 305, made a strong statement with its 296, just one stroke behind Linfield and Pacific for best team score on Sunday.
Rounding out the team scoring were Pacific at 608, Whitman 618, Puget Sound 630, George Fox 646 and Willamette 672.
Dustin Hegge, in his first season of collegiate golf, led the Lutes with a 73-74 - 147, three strokes over par and good for sixth place overall. Rounding out the PLU scoring were Scott Zhang (pictured) 79-72 - 151, Daron Casey 78-75 - 153, Auston Hilkin 79-75 - 154, Brandon Peterson 75-80 - 155, and Zack Kitchen 99-82 - 181.
Yutaro Sakamoto fired an even-par 72 on Sunday after a first-day 67 and won medalist honors with a five-under-ar 139. His teammate, Alex Fitch, was second with a 72-71 - 143.
PLU concludes the fall portion of its schedule on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23-24, when it plays at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic scheduled for Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore.
