PLU Men Sixth, Women Seventh at Fall Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. - Pacific Lutheran finished sixth in the men's division and seventh in the women's competition at the NWC Fall Classic that concluded Sunday at Heron Lakes Golf Club.
With medalist Tyler Nelson shooting a three-under-par 141 (72-69), the Linfield Wildcats won the men's team title with a two-round total of 591 (299-292). First-round leader Whitworth was three strokes back at 594, followed by Pacific 596, Puget Sound 607, George Fox 623, PLU 624 (311-313), Whitman 629, Willamette 642 and host Lewis & Clark 658.
Kyle Spitzer fired rounds of 78 and 77 for a 155, leading the Lutes and finishing in a tie for 19th. Rounding out the PLU scores were Kevin Englund 157 (75-82), Barrett Stamps 157 (79-78), Auston Hilkin 163 (79-84), Scott Zhang (164 (86-77) and Daron Casey 168 (87-81).
George Fox made a massive second-round comeback to win the women's team crown. The Bruins shot a 342 on Saturday but came back with a 309 today for a two-day total of 651. First-day leader Whitworth was second with a 663, followed by Linfield 681, Puget Sound and Whitman 708, Pacific 741, PLU 772 (395-377), Willamette 818 and Lewis & Clark 855. Whitworth's Emily Guthrie earned medalist honors with a 157 (80-77), but the next four spots went to George Fox golfers.
Kindra Stamps, who tied for 29th, led the Lutes with a 191 coming on rounds of 100 and 91. Caitlin Malone had a 193 (98-95), followed by Mallory Mueller 195 (98-97), Bethany Gray 201 (99-102), Rachel Erickson 202 (108-94) and Karina Shelton 206 (107-99).
The NWC Fall Classic ends the fall golf season for all of the Northwest Conference schools.
