SPOKANE - Sophomore Scott Zhang sits in a tie for second place, but Pacific Lutheran had a tough day otherwise in Sunday's first round of the Whitworth Invitational being played at Spokane Country Club.
Zhang fired an opening-round 75, three-over-par on the par 72, 6,663-yard layout. Unfortunately, no other PLU player broke 85 as the Lutes shot a 337 team score, putting them in last place in the six-team field. Host Whitworth carded a 310, followed by Linfield at 315, Pacific 321, George Fox 327, Whitman 330 and PLU 337.
Rounding out the PLU first-day scores were Hans Stegemoeller 86, Kevin Englund 87, Barrett Stamps 89, and Auston Hilkin and Kyle Spitzer 92.
The 36-hole tournament ends on Monday.
