PLU Teams Struggle in First Day of NWC Spring Classic
MOSES LAKE - Whitworth took the lead and Pacific Lutheran had a rough go of it during Saturday's first round of the NWC Spring Classic men's golf tournament being held at The Links at Moses Pointe.
Whitworth shot a 293, just five strokes over par, to take the lead in the 36-hole event. Puget Sound is in second with a 300, followed by Linfield 305, Pacific 308, Whitman 313, George Fox 320, PLU 328, Willamette 329 and Lewis & Clark 358.
Linfield's Tyler Nelson had the low score with a four-under-par 68, followed one stroke back by Whitworth's Cameron Whittle. They were the only golfers to come in under par on the par 72, 6,965-yard layout.
Scott Zhang shot an 80 to lead the Lutes. Other first-round PLU scores showed Daron Casey at 81, Brandon Peterson 83, Auston Hilkin 84, Barrett Stamps 85 and Kyle Spitzer 89.
In the women's NWC Spring Classic at Apple Tree Golf Club in Yakima, Whitworth took the first day lead with a 331, followed by Puget Sound at 337 and George Fox at 341. Rounding out the team scoring were Linfield 343, Pacific 361, Whitman 380, PLU 401, Willamette 458, and Lewis & Clark incomplete.
Whitworth's Emily Travis holds the first day lead with a 76, followed by Linfield's Sophie Corr with an 80.
Mallory Mueller, PLU's only senior, led the Lutes with a 95. Kindra Stamps shot a 101, followed by Caitlin Malone at 102, Rachel Erickson 103, Karina Shelton 108 and Kara Herzog 112.
Both tournaments conclude on Sunday with another 18 holes of action.
