Pacific Lutheran junior Max Beatty threw 10 shutout innings and picked up a couple of wins last week to earn the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week award as a baseball pitcher.
In pitching the Lutes to wins over Concordia (Ore.) on Feb. 4 and Concordia (Texas) on Feb. 8, Beatty allowed just six hits while striking out 14 batters in his 10 innings of work.
He got the win over visiting Concordia (Ore.) despite pitching only two innings because of the college rule that allows a coach to declare an under-five-inning outing. He left the game with a 2-0 lead after the pre-determined two innings, and the Lutes went on to win, 4-0.
Beatty then shut down 16th-ranked Concordia (Texas) on five hits with 12 Ks in eight innings in Pacific Lutheran's 3-0 win at the Arizona Desert Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
Pacific Lutheran, 4-2 overall, returns to action Feb. 22-24 with four games at the CCC-NWC Challenge in McMinnville, Ore., and Portland, Ore.
