Texas-Dallas Offense Buries Lutes, 13-6
HAPPY VALLEY, Ariz. - Texas-Dallas collected 20 hits on Thursday to beat Pacific Lutheran, 13-6, at the Arizona Desert Classic baseball tournament played at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.
With the defeat, PLU falls to 1-2 for the season. Texas-Dallas improved its record to 2-2.
Leading 2-1, the Comets broke away from the Lutes with a seven-run third inning. Trevor Lubking, who allowed only two hits in six innings in his first collegiate start against Concordia (Ore.) on Feb. 7, was roughed up for eight earned runs in two innings and took the loss.
"We have a young staff and we were expecting some bumps in the road along the way," head coach Geoff Loomis said. "Today was one of those days."
The Lutes collected seven hits in the game including two apiece by Sammy Davis and Brock Gates. PLU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jacob Hoffman drew a two-out walk and then Gates hit a double to drive him in. Gates, PLU's all-conference senior first baseman, accounted for the second run with a solo homer leading off the sixth inning.
Pacific Lutheran scored four times in the top of the ninth on a two-run double by Jaron Iwakami and a two-run homer by Davis.
PLU returns to action on Friday when it plays McMurry University from Texas. The Lutes have four games scheduled at the Arizona Desert Classic, which runs through Sunday.
