Lutes Players Enjoy All-Star Experience

A trio of Pacific Lutheran baseball players enjoyed their experience at the West Coast Baseball League All-Star game played Tuesday night at Goss Field in Corvallis, Ore. The low-scoring game was won by the East, 4-2.

Brock Gates (Federal Way, Wash. / Decatur HS) played the entire game at first base for the East team, going 0-for-4 at the plate but handling 14 defensive chances without an error.

Gates, who will be a senior for the 2012 PLU baseball team, leads the WCBL in runs batted in while playing for the East Division-leading Wenatchee AppleSox.

Corey Moore (University Place, Wash. / Curtis HS) played the final four innings for the West, going 0-for-2 with three defensive assists and no errors. Max Beatty (Vancouver, Wash. / Fort Vancouver HS) pitched a perfect fifth inning for the West, using only five total pitches to retire three consecutive East hitters.

Moore, a 2012 senior and Beatty, a 2012 junior, both play for the West Division-leading Corvallis Knights.

According to a report on the West Coast Baseball League web site (www.wccbl.com) more than 2,500 people were in the stands, including 24 Major League Baseball scouts.
