Trey Watt Signs Contract With Diamondbacks
Trey Watt, a three-time first team All-Northwest Conference pitcher for Pacific Lutheran University, has signed a free agent contract with Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks.
He will report to the Diamondbacks' Rookie League team in Missoula, Mont. The Missoula Ospreys open their 2010 season on Monday, June 21, with the first of a four-game series at Helena.
"I'm so happy for Trey," PLU baseball head coach Geoff Loomis said. "This is his reward for all the hard work and dedication he has put into baseball."
Watt (Tualatin, Ore. / Tualatin HS) finished the 2010 season with a 9-1 record and a 2.81 earned run average. Watt started 12 games, completed two, and struck out 67 batters while walking just 21 in 86 1/3 innings of work. Opponents hit .248 against him this season.
Watt helped lead the Lutes to an 18-6 record and a second-place finish in the conference standings. PLU finished 30-10 overall in 2010, the program's third 30-win season in the last four years. Prior to the 2007 season when Pacific Lutheran won its first league baseball title since 1954, the record for most wins in a season by a PLU team was 26 set in 1994.
A three-time first team all-conference selection, Watt earned 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-West Region second team recognition. He also received the region's Gold Glove Award for pitchers after handling 29 total chances without an error.
Watt finished his PLU career with 22 wins, tied for fourth most in school history. Watt also ranks on the all-time top 10 lists in innings pitched (seventh, 231.1), strikeouts (third, 212) and earned run average (seventh, 3.54).
Watt becomes the second PLU player since 2007 to sign a free agent contract, joining Joe DiPietro, who signed following his senior year in 2007. DiPietro is currently in his third season pitching for the Frontier League's Kalamazoo Kings.
