PLU Finishes Fifth in McIlroy-Lewis Trophy Race
For the seventh time in the past eight years, Pacific Lutheran finished fifth in the Northwest Conference's 2009-20 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy standings.
PLU, with a conference volleyball championship to its credit, finished the year with 175 points, the fewest it has ever received in the McIlroy-Lewis standings since the scoring system was changed after the 1998-99 academic year. Whitworth University won the trophy for the third straight year, garnering eight conference championships on the way to 267 points, the highest total for any school since the scoring system change.
Points are awarded to schools based on their teams' conference finishes in their respective sports. Conference championship teams earn 18 points, second-place finishers are given 16 points, and down with the last-place teams receiving two points. A total of 18 sports are factored into the point system.
Linfield College, which won three conference titles, finished second in the 2009-10 McIlroy-Lewis standings with 238 points, followed by Willamette University with 192, University of Puget Sound 189, PLU 175, Whitman College 146, Lewis & Clark College 131, George Fox University 129, and Pacific University 121.
Pacific Lutheran won the all-sports trophy 15 times over a 17-year period from 1986 until 2002.
